| State Health Department Conrad 30 J-1 Waivers
Description
Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) studying in the United States on J-1 visas must pursue a waiver of the two year home residency requirement if they wish to remain and work in the United States.
Physicians have a special category to apply for a waiver of the Section 212(e) home residency requirement. State Health Departments can apply for up to 30 waivers per fiscal year for physicians who agree to provide medical services in under-served areas. These State Health Department Waivers, commonly called Conrad 30 waivers, are available for physicians who provide primary and specialty care in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA), Medically Underserved Areas(MUA), or to Medically Underserved Populations(MUP).
An application for Conrad 30 waiver of the J-1 visa two year home residency requirement must contain certain basic elements, as required by Federal code, and must comply with the individual State’s policies and requirements. Each State has slightly different requirements, depending on the unmet healthcare needs of the populations.
