The
Krome Detention Center, also known as the Krome Service
Processing Center, is located in Miami, FL at the edge
of the Everglades. Run by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement
(ICE), the Krome Detention Center is a facility where
foreign nationals are held temporarily for a variety of
reasons. For the most part, foreign nationals will be
held at Krome while the courts determine their immigration
status, or while awaiting removal from the US and deportation
back to their country of citizenship.
Broward Transitional Center, or BTC, on Powerline Road
in Pompano Beach has the same purpose as Krome Detention
Center, but the Broward facility is operated by private
contractors, not ICE.
Both Krome Detention Center and Broward Transitional
Center and can be confusing and sad places where immigrants
are separated from their children, parents, spouses, and
other loved ones. Many detainees have been transferred
from other states, or have been arrested at airports and
seaports throughout Florida. Removed from their families
and having no understanding of US immigration law, Krome
and Broward detainees often face the possibility of deportation
without a full awareness of their legal rights.
