New Mobile Travel App for the International Road Warriors

Believe it or not, but not all immigration news are bad. What's unfortunate is that our government is not capable of promoting what it does right. So, we'll give them a hand.

Hats off to Customs & Border Protection (CBP) for authorizing and launching an app which will significantly shorten wait times for certain travelers when they arrive at our borders from overseas.

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) allows eligible travelers to submit their passport and customs declaration form via a smart phone or tablet prior to CBP inspection.

CBP advertises five easy steps to MPC:

  • Download the Mobile Passport Control App from the Apple App Store prior to arriving
  • Create a profile with your passport information
  • Complete the "New Trip" section upon arrival in the United States
  • Submit your customs declaration form through the app to receive an electronic receipt with an Encrypted Quick Response (QR) code. This receipt will expire four hours after being issued
  • Bring your passport and smart phone or tablet with your digital bar-coded receipt to a CBP officer upon arrival

As with any new process there's a learning curve and phase-in time. At this time MPC is available at Hartsfield International in Atlanta and CBP expects to expand to more airports later this year and to Android smart phone users too. Currently MPC is available to U.S. citizens and Canadian visitors.

I will keep you posted on future CBP resource optimization strategy results. If you want to learn more about MPC go to http://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/2014-08-11-000000/new-mobile-passport-control-app-available
