Under the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexican and Canadian business people are allowed to enter and work in the U.S. as business professionals for a salary. The duration of this type of visa is for increments of three years. Unlimited extensions may be granted. Those who obtain a TN visa are permitted to bring their spouse and any children under the age of 21; these family members will be classified as Treaty Dependent (TD). Under the TD visa, they are allowed to attend school or college.
The requirements for a TN visa include:
- You must be a citizen of Mexico or Canada
- You must be coming to the U.S. to work in a professional capacity temporarily for a U.S. employer
- You must be qualified in your professional occupation
- Your occupation must be listed as part of the NAFTA agreement
Examples of occupations that qualify under NAFTA include accountants, engineers, computer system analysts, graphic designers, management consultants, social workers, scientific technicians, dentists, occupational therapists, doctors, biochemists, and teachers, among others.
