Avoiding These Common Mistakes on Your Green Card Application

filling out application
|

Your Green Card application may seem simple and straightforward. However, getting your application approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can be a rigorous process with many unexpected challenges that leave room for mistakes.

In order to help you avoid mistakes during the process, we want to provide you with some common errors on Green Card application packages so that you know what to expect.

Failing to Provide Translations

All documents you submit with your application that are not in English must be translated, word for word, in English. Additionally, the translations have to be certified, meaning that the translator must certify in writing that they translated the documents correctly and provide the date of the translations as well as their personal information. Don’t forget that you are required to submit both the non-translated and translated versions as well.

Missing Information on the Forms

Many applicants leave questions that don’t apply to them empty. However, you are required to fill out every box, even those with questions or information that don’t apply to you. Instead, write “N/A” (meaning “not applicable”) in the space provided. Make sure to fill out all required signature lines with an original signature using “wet ink.”

Photo Problems

Green Card applications require “passport-style” photos. These can usually be taken at most drug stores and must meet certain government requirements, including:

  • A color photo, taken within the last 6 months
  • A clear image of your face with no filters
  • No selfies
  • No eyeglasses or sunglasses
  • Plain white or off-white background

Insufficient Fees

Filing fees for Green Card applications vary by situation, but you can expect to pay between $1,200 and $1,760. You must submit this at the same time as your application.
