Since Carlos Lorenzo’s first career day in kindergarten, he knew he wanted to be an attorney. Probably because his father is an Attorney and he always guided him in that direction, or maybe because he likes helping people in general. He never had any doubt growing up that being a lawyer was what he was to become. He has been lucky enough to practice in several areas of the law. He has been general counsel to a government agency, special advisor to the Puerto Rico Trade Company, and an Immigration Attorney both in a non-profit organization and private practice.

Carlos first discovered immigration law while on his second year of law school. He volunteered to participate in his school’s immigration law clinic. He never had before taken an immigration law class, but seeing that it involved helping people from different backgrounds while working on a topic totally different from what he had known before intrigued him. He saw it as a challenge and opportunity to learn something new. They worked the entire semester on a cancellation of removal case and he was chosen to argue the case in the San Juan Immigration Court. All their hard work paid off when the Judge granted their client the cancellation. The client immediately started to cry and could not believe that he was finally able to stay with his family in the U.S. That was a feeling that Carlos will never forget.

After completing his LL.M in Maritime Law from the University of Southampton in England, Carlos returned to Puerto Rico where he began to practice law and Immigration law on and off for almost 10 years. The last 5 years he has practiced Immigration law exclusively focusing in removal defense, both in New York City and Florida.

Working at MGZ means so much for Carlos. It means being in a place that values the rights and lives of all immigrants. It means working in an environment where you can see how dedicated and compassionate everyone is towards clients. It means, having the resources and collective knowledge of handling and working on complex cases where he can challenge himself to be a better attorney and better person. It feels like the right place to be if you want to practice this field and help others.
